BriefTether guide
Use BriefTether
Start with a brief, review the requirements, save a baseline, and compare the work when the client asks for a change.
Create an account
The invited operator must complete the service's first setup before general registration opens. That operator uses the prepared company email, a private setup code, and a password they choose themselves. The code is not published in this guide. Once setup is complete, other users can create their own independent workspaces.
Register with a username, a password of at least twelve characters, and a workspace name. A username may be an email address, but this build does not verify email ownership or send recovery emails. Save the recovery codes shown at registration in a safe place. Each account starts with an empty workspace.
If you lose your password, use the recovery page with your username, a recovery code, and a new password. Recovery invalidates old sessions. Without the password or an unused recovery code, access cannot be restored through an automated email flow.
Start a project
Create a project with its name, client label, currency, and your hourly rate. Choose the fictional sample if you want to explore the workflow first. Example clients and agency evidence are invented and clearly labeled.
Add documents
Upload supported text documents or paste their contents. Set the type to client brief, agency evidence, or change request. Text, Markdown, CSV, DOCX, XLSX, and text-based PDF are supported. Scanned image PDFs need readable text before import; this build does not promise OCR. Upload errors explain the applicable file or content limit.
Only use documents you are permitted to process. Remove unnecessary personal or confidential information before uploading. A source document linked to a live requirement cannot be deleted until the row is detached. A frozen baseline retains its own source text.
Review requirements
Add a requirement manually or import a CSV. The title column is required. The provided sample also includes description, category, priority, acceptance criteria, assumptions, exclusions, owner, review status, hours, and unit rate. It omits quotations so the same sample can be imported in any account.
If your CSV includes a source or evidence quotation, it must also provide the valid document ID from this project. A quote without a selected document is rejected. For a portable sample, import first, then edit each row to choose its documents and add exact excerpts.
Link a source document and an exact excerpt to show what the client requested. Link agency evidence separately. Exact quotation checks verify that the excerpt occurs in the chosen document; they do not validate the underlying business claim.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Open | Still needs your review. |
| Verified | You reviewed the requirement and its acceptance criterion. This is your decision, not a certification. |
| Question | A condition or missing input needs clarification. |
| Excluded | Outside this estimate. The row is retained and its cost is not included in totals. |
Hours and rates are your inputs. BriefTether calculates line costs and totals; it does not invent a market rate, tax, delivery guarantee, or automatic quote.
Choose your AI provider
In workspace settings, select Google Gemini or Anthropic Claude and connect your own API key. Each account has separate encrypted credentials for each provider. Configure the model, input and output prices, output limit, and request budget. Keys are not returned to the browser after saving. AI availability depends on your account's configured connection; the manual workflow remains available.
In a project, select documents and inspect the actual provider, model, and estimated cost before consenting to extraction. Gemini sends selected text to Google; Claude sends it to Anthropic. No document analysis is triggered by saving a key. The estimate is approximate, and an API error never produces a simulated answer or a silent provider switch.
Google's unpaid API requires public, nonpersonal, nonconfidential input and a separate confirmation. Read the privacy notice and check the provider's regional restrictions before use. Free-quota errors are shown without automatic retries or a paid fallback.
Check each draft candidate and save the rows you accept. AI extraction does not set your hours or rates and does not commit the agency to the work. One local Gemini request on a public fictional brief returned two source-linked drafts; this is a limited example, not a general quality result. Cloud Gemini inference awaits initial operator setup. Live Claude extraction has not been tested.
Save and compare a baseline
Freeze a baseline with a meaningful label after reviewing the scope. The saved version includes requirement rows, document text, and estimate information. It is immutable. You can create a later baseline without rewriting the earlier one.
Edit existing rows to record changed requirements and add new rows for added work. The comparison shows added, removed, and changed rows using stable row IDs and fields. Uploading a second brief alone does not run a semantic comparison or automatically change requirements.
Record change requests
Record the client's request, your estimate of additional hours and rate, and a decision note. Keep its status pending, accepted, or declined. Accepted change-request impact is separate from the original requirement estimate and is not silently applied to its rows.
Export or erase your data
Export a project as CSV or JSON, or open its printable scope report. You may export a saved baseline. The account page exports your workspace data without passwords, recovery secrets, or the API credential. Account deletion requires your password and the confirmation word DELETE; it removes active workspace records and ends your sessions.
Download the fictional source files
Use these files in a new sample project. The CSV can be imported without document IDs. After import, edit each row to select its matching documents and paste exact excerpts from the brief and agency evidence. The example estimates are invented inputs.
